"Every
student, regardless of background or innate talent, has the potential
to shine." Cantor
Stern has been with Temple Beth O'r/Beth Torah since 1994. He received
his early Jewish education at yeshivot in Brooklyn, New York, and went
on to obtain a degree in Jewish Studies from Brandeis University. He
also did course work at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. His
interest in the cantorate first developed when he sang in the choir of
the legendary Cantor Moshe Koussevitsky at Temple Beth El in Boro Park.
He continued his musical and cantorial studies at the Hebrew Arts
School in New York and with a number of leading cantors in New York and
Massachusetts. His first professional position was serving as cantor of
the Sea Crest Hotel in Cape Cod at the age of 22. In
addition to leading the davening at Shabbat and Holiday services,
Cantor Stern conducts the Temple Choir, which performs at High Holiday
services and other special occasions. He arranges or composes almost
all of the music, occasionally incorporating themes from classical
opera or Broadway songs into the compositions. Cantor
Stern also prepares all of our Bar and Bat Mitzvah students. He teaches
them to read from the Torah and lead parts of the service, in addition
to chanting the traditional Haftorah. Most importantly, he insists that
the entire experience be—for both student and
parents—an enjoyable and meaningful one. In addition to his work in the cantorate, Cantor Stern has been involved for many years with the securities markets and has taught at New York University and the New York Institute of Finance. His hobbies include reading, basketball and yoga. |
